What is a resin bound driveway?

Resin bound surfacing is created by mixing washed, dried stone with a clear UV-stable resin and trowelling it onto a suitable base. The stones are fully coated but not sealed on top, leaving small gaps between them so water can drain through.

Decorative & practical

Smooth, modern appearance

A resin bound driveway gives a smooth, gravel-like appearance without loose stones being tracked into the house. With a wide choice of stone blends, you can pick a colour that works with your brickwork, windows and paths.

We can highlight steps and edges, create contrasting borders and carefully finish around drains, manholes and inspection covers so everything looks neat rather than patched in.

Built to last

Laid over the right base

Resin bound surfacing is only as good as the base underneath. We will assess your existing driveway and explain whether it is suitable for a resin overlay or if a full new base is required.

Where a new base is needed, we excavate to the correct depth, install a compacted sub-base and lay an appropriate tarmac or concrete layer before the resin is installed.

Resin overlays vs full new resin driveways

In some cases we can install a resin bound overlay over your existing driveway. In other cases a full dig out and new base is the only sensible option. We will always explain the difference on site.

Cost-effective option

Resin overlay on existing driveway

A resin overlay is where the resin bound mix is applied over existing tarmac or concrete that is still sound and stable. This can be a cost-effective way to refresh a driveway without a full excavation.

Overlays can be suitable where:

  • The current surface is generally level and crack-free
  • No major movement or sinking is present
  • There is enough height at thresholds and garage doors
  • Drainage can still be maintained or improved

Resin overlays starting from £40 per m²
Based on larger areas with a sound existing surface and generous m² measurements.

Best long-term solution

New resin driveway with full base

Where the existing drive is badly cracked, sinking or too high against damp courses and thresholds, a full dig out and new base is usually the only sensible option.

This involves:

  • Excavating to the correct depth
  • Installing a compacted sub-base
  • Adding suitable tarmac or concrete base layer
  • Laying the resin bound surface at the correct thickness

Although more involved, a properly constructed base gives the best lifespan and helps avoid cracking and movement in years to come.

Resin driveway before & after

These before and after photos show how tired concrete and older driveways can be transformed with a properly installed resin bound overlay.

Resin driveway colours & design ideas

Resin bound stone blends range from warm golds and natural browns through to cool greys and contemporary silvers. We can help you choose a colour that sits well with your brickwork, windows and surrounding paving.

Warm tones

Golden & natural blends

Warm gold and natural stone mixes complement traditional brick homes, cottages and older village properties. They work well where you want a softer, more natural look without going too dark.

Modern look

Grey & silver mixes

Grey and silver resin blends suit modern houses, new estates and properties with anthracite windows or doors. A darker border can be added around the edges for extra definition.

Resin driveway FAQs

A few common questions from homeowners in Sussex, Surrey and Kent considering a resin bound driveway or resin overlay.

How long does a resin driveway take to install?

For an average driveway with a suitable base already in place, the resin installation itself usually takes around 1–2 days, depending on size and detailing. Where a new base is required, extra time is needed for excavation, sub-base and base layers.

Is a resin driveway slippery?

Resin bound surfaces are generally good for grip because of the exposed stone texture. In most residential situations they perform well underfoot and for vehicle tyres, especially when properly installed and maintained.

How do I look after a resin driveway?

Maintenance is usually straightforward: regular sweeping to keep leaves and debris off the surface and the occasional light power wash where needed. We will explain any care tips specific to your driveway before we leave site.

Can you lay resin over my existing driveway?

Often yes – if your existing tarmac or concrete is still sound and at the right level. We will check for cracking, movement and drainage issues on site, then advise whether a resin overlay is suitable or if a new base is required.

Will I need planning permission?

Many resin bound driveways fall under permitted development, especially where water drains towards a suitable area and not directly onto the road. We can talk this through in person and suggest permeable options where appropriate.

What areas do you cover for resin driveways?
