Block paving styles, colours & patterns

From simple, straight patterns to more detailed designs with feature borders, we can lay block paving to suit both modern estates and older village properties.

Popular colours

Brindle & charcoal

Brindle (a mix of reds and browns) and charcoal are two of the most popular block colours. Brindle works well with older brickwork, while charcoal gives a smart, modern look and can be used for borders or full driveways.

Patterns

Herringbone & stretcher bond

45° or 90° herringbone patterns provide excellent interlock and look great on most driveways. Stretcher bond (laid in lines) can suit narrower drives and paths and can be combined with feature bands.

Borders & features

A contrasting border in charcoal or a different block can really set the driveway off. We can also create feature bands across the drive, highlight steps and define parking bays where needed.

How we install a block paving driveway

A block paving driveway is only as good as the base underneath it. We follow a clear process so the drive keeps its shape and drains properly for years to come.

Proper preparation

Sub-base & levels

We start by excavating the area to the correct depth and disposing of the spoil responsibly. A compacted Type 1 or Type 3 sub-base is then installed and levelled to allow for the finished block thickness and any bedding sand.

We check levels carefully to make sure water runs away from the house and towards suitable drainage points or planted areas.

Neat finishes

Blocks, cutting & jointing

Blocks are laid in the chosen pattern, with edge restraints such as kerbs or concrete haunching to stop movement. Cuts around manholes, channels and boundaries are kept neat to give a tidy finish.

Once laid, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the surface is compacted, locking the blocks together.

Block paving with other driveway options

Block paving can be combined with other driveway materials to create contrast, improve drainage or keep costs sensible on larger areas.

Mixed materials

Block edges to tarmac or resin

Block paving borders can be used to frame a tarmac driveway or resin bound driveway, giving a crisp edge and helping define parking spaces or paths.

Drive & patio

Matching patios & paths

Many customers choose to have a patio or path laid at the same time as their block paving driveway so everything ties together, especially on side paths and around the house.

Alternative surfaces

Resin & tar & chip options

If you prefer a smoother finish or have a longer rural drive, we can also quote for resin bound or tar & chip surfaces and explain the pros and cons of each.

Block paving driveway FAQs

A few common questions from homeowners in Sussex, Surrey and Kent looking at block paving for their driveway.

How long does a block paving driveway take to install?

Most average block paving driveways take around 4–7 days from excavation to completion, depending on the size, access and detailing. Larger driveways, complex patterns or additional features like walls and steps may take longer.

Will weeds grow through my block paving?

Weeds usually grow from seeds that land in the jointing sand rather than coming up from underneath. Regular sweeping and the occasional treatment where needed will help keep weeds under control.

Does block paving need sealing?

Sealing is optional. Some customers like the enhanced colour and easier cleaning that a suitable sealer can offer, but it is not essential. We can discuss the pros and cons during your quotation.

How do I look after a block paving driveway?

Regular sweeping, keeping joints topped up with kiln-dried sand where needed and occasional washing is usually enough. We can advise on sensible maintenance routines when we complete the job.

Can you extend or repair an existing block paving driveway?

In many cases we can extend or repair existing block paving, especially if the original blocks are still available. We’ll take a look on site and let you know what is possible.
