What tar & chip is (and why preparation matters)
Tar & chip is not a “cover-up”. It’s a surface dressing system where a binder is applied and finished with stone chippings that are rolled in. If the base underneath is weak, wet, or uneven, the finish won’t last.
That’s why we treat tar & chip like a preparation-first job: we fix soft spots, correct falls, deal with drainage issues and make sure edges are controlled before any binder goes down.

Preparation checklist (what we do before tar & chip goes down)
This is the difference between a tidy surface that holds up, and a finish that moves, puddles or breaks up. We focus on the base and the details first.
1) Base assessment
We check for movement, soft spots, old repairs failing, and areas where water sits. We also look at access, turning stress (wheel scrub) and how the drive is used day to day.
2) Repairs & strengthening
Potholes, weak edges and broken areas are repaired. If there are sections that need strengthening, we address those before dressing — especially at entrances and turning points.
3) Levels, falls & drainage
Tar & chip needs water to shed away. We correct dips where practical and ensure falls run to the right place so water doesn’t sit and soften the base.
4) Edge control
Neat edges help the surface hold its shape. We tidy lines and deal with crumbling margins so the finish doesn’t spread or unravel at the sides over time.
5) Clean surface & key
Loose material and contamination reduce bond. The surface is cleaned and prepared so the binder can adhere properly rather than sitting on dust or debris.
6) Practical plan
We plan access, parking and vehicle movement during works. On longer drives we can phase sections where needed to keep access sensible.
Installation steps (binder, stone & compaction)
Once preparation is complete, we apply the surface dressing in a controlled sequence so the finish beds in properly.
1) Binder application
The binder is applied evenly at the correct rate for the base and intended stone size. Consistency here prevents thin patches and premature wear.
2) Stone chippings
Clean, graded chippings are spread to create the finished surface. The right stone grade helps stability and the overall “country lane” look.
3) Rolling & settle
Chippings are rolled in to seat them into the binder. We then allow time for the surface to settle so it becomes more stable under tyres.
Aftercare (early days)
- A small amount of loose stone early on is normal.
- We advise turning technique and initial use to reduce scuffing.
- Loose chippings can be swept once the surface has settled.

Sometimes — if the base is stable and drainage/falls are workable. We check for movement, cracking, soft spots and water issues first.
Is tar & chip suitable for sloped driveways?
It can be, but slope increases the importance of preparation, edges and drainage. We’ll advise the best option after a visit.
Why do you focus so much on preparation?
Because surface dressing relies on the base. If the base fails, the surface fails — so we fix the cause, not just the appearance.
Will there be loose stones afterwards?
A small amount early on is normal. The finish beds in over time and we’ll advise how to use it in the early period.
How long does a tar & chip driveway last?
With a sound base and correct installation, it can give many years of service and may be refreshed in future when wear shows.
